The necropolis of Can Gambús-1

The Neolithic necropolis of Can Gambús-1 is located in Sabadell, placed at the top of a hill, between 195 and 198 m, in a 3200m2 area.

It was fully excavated between 2003 and 2004, offering 47 funerary complex structures and monumental type, comprising a well-defined and homogeneous group. It is a unique necropolis of adult individuals, with individual and double tombs and with a whole of 51 individuals buried. It offers a unique variety of types and a rich and diversified funeral trousseau. This consists of a wide variety of ceramic containers, lithic tools such as knife blades, spikes and geometric flint axes and hoes, polished stone mills, bone tools, personal ornaments such as necklaces and bracelets, etc. This necropolis is by far the most complete and best documented of the culture of pit from the IV millennium BC in Catalonia.

The excavation of this necropolis led to bigger research projects that has developed with the help of many professionals. It includes material studies, anthropological and taxonomic studies of the buried individuals, etc. When talking about further research, we have to mention the following project in wich Arrago is involved: HAR2011-23149: “Aproximación a las primeras comunidades neolíticas en el N-E peninsular a traves de sus practicas funerarias“.
